| British statesman and engineer, born in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow, entered the field of radio communication, and became the first general manager of the BBC (1922), then its director-general (1927–38). He was the architect of public service broadcasting in the UK. He became an MP in 1940, and was minister of works and buildings (1940–2). The BBC inaugurated the Reith Lectures in 1948 in honour of his influence on broadcasting, and he was created a baron in 1940. |
