| Archbishop of Canterbury (1961–74), born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EC England, UK. He studied theology at Cambridge, was ordained in 1928, and became professor at Durham (1940–50) and Cambridge (1950–2). He was Bishop of Durham (1952–6) and Archbishop of York (1956–61). As Archbishop of Canterbury he worked for Church unity, making a historic visit to Pope Paul VI in the Vatican in 1966, but was disappointed in his attempts to forge a reconciliation with the Methodist Church. His books include The Resurrection of Christ (1945) and Be Still and Know (1982). He retired in 1974, and was given a life peerage. |
