| biography:
| British general, born at Badminton, Gloucestershire, SWC England, UK, the son of the Duke of Beaufort. He joined the army in 1804, fought at Waterloo (1815), became an MP, and was made a baron in 1852. In 1854 he led an ill-prepared force against the Russians in the Crimea, but though victorious at Alma did not follow up his advantage. His ambiguous order led to the Charge of the Light Brigade (1854) at Balaclava. His name was given to the raglan sleeve, which came into use in the 1850s. |
