| biography:
| Grammarian and writer on the English language, born in the Isle of Man, UK. He was educated at University College London, where he lectured in English (1947–54), then taught at Durham (1954–60). He returned to a chair at University College (1960–81), where he also directed the Survey of English Usage. Major grammars in which he was involved are A Grammar of Contemporary English (1972) and A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (1985). He was also Vice-Chancellor of London University (1981–5). He was made a life peer in 1994. |
