| biography:
| Northern Ireland politician and prime minister (1963–9), born in Co Antrim, NE Northern Ireland, UK. He was educated at Eton, and served in the Irish Guards during World War 2. A member of the Northern Ireland parliament (1946–70), he held junior posts before becoming minister for home affairs (1956), minister of finance (1956–63), then prime minister. A supporter of closer cross-border links with the Republic, he angered many Unionists. Following a general election in 1969, dissension in the Unionist Party increased, and he resigned the premiership soon after. Made a life peer in 1970, he continued to speak out on Northern Ireland issues. |
