| Explorer and botanist, born in Rostock, N Germany. After emigrating to Australia in 1847, he was appointed government botanist for the state of Victoria in 1853, and travelled extensively, building up a valuable collection of native flora. He explored Western Australia and Tasmania, promoted expeditions into New Guinea, and was a member of the first Australian Antarctic Exploration committee. He sponsored a fund organized by Melbourne ladies for an expedition in search of the lost explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, and he organized the 1875 trip into the central desert by Ernest Giles. He published a large number of scientific works on the plants of Australia. |
