| biography:
| Actor, stage director, and founder of the Mermaid Theatre, born in Uxbridge, W Greater London, UK. His career as an actor flourished from the 1930s onward, but it was as the founder of the Mermaid Theatre that he made his greatest contribution to the British theatre. In 1951 he founded a small private theatre in the grounds of his home at St John's Wood, London; it was re-erected in the City of London, and in 1959 a permanent, professional Mermaid Theatre, financed by public subscription, was built at Puddle Dock, Blackfriars. It opened with his own musical play, Lock Up Your Daughters, adapted from Fielding. He was knighted in 1969. |
