| Chemist and industrialist, born in Kassel, C Germany. Settling in England in 1864, he perfected at Widnes a sulphur recovery process. He founded in 1873, with John Tomlinson Brunner, a great alkali-works at Winnington, Cheshire, and made discoveries in nickel manufacture. In 1896 he gave to the Royal Institution for the nation a physico-chemical laboratory costing £100 000. |
