| Industrialist and statesman, born in Farnsworth, Cheshire, NWC England, UK, the son of Ludwig Mond. After some years in industry and as chairman of the Mond Nickel Co, he became a Liberal MP (1906–28), the first commissioner of works (1916–21) and minister of health (1922). In 1926 he helped to form ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd), of which he became chairman. A powerful advocate of industrial co-operation, in 1927 he instituted the Mond–Turner conference with the Trades Union Council, which suggested the formation of a national industrial council. |
