| biography:
| Businessman, born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. In 1907 he inherited the 60 Marks and Spencer penny bazaars which his father Michael Marks, with Thomas Spencer, had built up from 1884. In collaboration with Israel (later Lord) Sieff, he developed Marks and Spencer, with its pioneering policy of ‘Don't ask the price - it's a penny’, into a major retail chain. ‘Marks and Sparks’ used their considerable purchasing power to encourage British clothing manufacturers to achieve demanding standards, and their ‘St Michael’ brand label became a guarantee of high quality at a reasonable price. He was knighted in 1944 and created a baron in 1961. |
