| biography:
| Clergyman, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Oxford and Edinburgh, becoming minister of St Cuthbert's in Edinburgh (1926–30), then minister at Govan in Glasgow (1930–8). He founded the Iona Community, and as moderator of the General Assembly (1957–8) supported the controversial scheme to introduce bishops into the kirk. Well known as a writer and broadcaster, he was strongly left-wing. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1924, and in 1967 was created a life peer. In 1989 he was joint recipient of the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. |
