| biography:
| British soldier and colonial administrator, born in Fort St George, Chennai (formerly Madras), SE India. He served in the Sudan and Burma, and commanded an expedition against slavers in Nyasaland (1888). He was responsible for Uganda becoming a British protectorate in 1894, and became commissioner in the Nigerian hinterland (1897), and high commissioner for N Nigeria (1900–7). He was appointed Governor of Hong Kong from 1907, returned to Nigeria as governor of the two protectorates, becoming governor-general (1914–19) on their amalgamation. |
