| biography:
| Composer, born in London, UK. From a distinguished musical family, he had no conventional musical education. With Tim Rice he wrote Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (1968), and the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar (staged 1970), the LP of which achieved record-breaking sales. He has since composed the music for many West End hits, including Evita (1978), Cats (1981), and Starlight Express (1984). Other successes have included The Phantom of the Opera (1986) and Aspects of Love (1989); less successful were Whistle Down The Wind (1997), and other recent ventures. With the opening of Sunset Boulevard in 1993, he had five musicals concurrently in production in London. He wrote the film scores for Gumshoe (1971) and The Odessa File (1974), and, in a fresh departure, composed a Requiem Mass in 1985. He was knighted in 1992, and received a life peerage in 1997. |
