| Surgeon, born in Upton, Essex, SE England, UK, the son of Joseph Jackson Lister. He studied at London, and became professor of surgery at Glasgow (1859), Edinburgh (1869), and London (1877). His great work was the introduction (1865) of the use of antiseptic conditions during surgery, which greatly reduced surgical mortality. He was made a baronet in 1883, and a baron in 1897. |
