| biography:
| Painter, born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied and travelled extensively in Europe, and had success in 1855 with his ‘Cimabue's Madonna Carried in Procession through Florence’. Several of his paintings became mass best sellers in photogravure reproduction, and he also won distinction as a sculptor. He was made a member of the Royal Academy in 1869, and president in 1878, when he was also knighted. In 1886 he was made a baronet, and a baron just before he died. |
