| biography:
| Banker, born in Sittingbourne, Kent, SE England, UK. He studied at Oxford, practised as a lawyer (1954–60), and in 1965 qualified as a chartered accountant. He was a Kent county councillor (1961–77), and also served as a member of several national committees of enquiry. A director then chairman (1977–83) of the National Westminster Bank, he became Governor of the Bank of England in 1983. He was created a life peer in 1993. |
