| Anglican clergyman, born in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland, UK. Entering the Church of England in 1890, he was a curate at Leeds, dean of divinity at Magdalen College, Oxford, Bishop of Stepney (1901–8), and Canon of St Paul's. In 1908 he was appointed Archbishop of York, and in 1928 Archbishop of Canterbury. He was both counsellor and friend to George VI, who created him a life peer on his retirement in 1942. |
