| biography:
| British judge. He studied at Cambridge, served in the RAF in World War 2, and was called to the bar in 1946. He became a QC in 1962, and a judge in 1966, a Lord Justice of Appeal (1974–9), and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (1979–80). Appointed Lord Chief Justice of England (1980–92), he proved to be a vigorous leader of the courts. He was created a baron in 1979. |
