| biography:
| British politician, born in Lerwick, Shetland Is, NE Scotland, UK. He studied at Cambridge, worked for the Conservative Research Department, then became a merchant banker and journalist. He was elected Conservative MP for Kingston-upon-Thames in 1972. Always a staunch supporter of Margaret Thatcher, she appointed him financial secretary to the Treasury (1986) and promoted him to the Cabinet (1989). During November 1990 he managed John Major's successful campaign for the Conservative Party leadership and was rewarded with the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer. However, following his replacement in the 1993 Cabinet reshuffle, he launched an attack on Major's policies. He was given a life peerage in 1998. |
