| biography:
| British admiral, born in Tundiani Fort, India. He entered the navy in 1885, and served with distinction in the Boxer Rebellion (1900), earning rapid promotion to commander. He was chief-of-staff Eastern Mediterranean (1915–16), and in 1918 commanded the Dover Patrol, leading the raids on German U-boat bases at Zeebrugge and Ostend (1918). He was promoted to admiral in 1930. MP for Portsmouth (1934–43), he was recalled in 1940, and appointed director of combined operations (1940–1). His books include Naval Memoirs (2 vols, 1934–35) and Amphibious Warfare and Combined Operations (1943). |
