| biography:
| English soldier, born in Naini Tal, NE India. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, was commissioned in 1905, and served on India's NW Frontier (1908) and in Somaliland in World War 1. He was appointed assistant secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence (1926–30), and chief-of-staff to Winston Churchill (1940–6), where he participated in most major Allies' conferences. He later became secretary of state for Commonwealth Relations (1951–2), and secretary-general to NATO (1952–7). |
