| biography:
| British judge. He studied at Glasgow University and Christ's College, Cambridge, and became a lecturer at the London School of Economics (1965–9). He was called to the bar in 1967, and became a QC (1978) and a deputy judge in the High Court (1987). Appointed shadow Lord Chancellor (1992–7), he became Lord Chancellor in 1997. He was made a life peer in 1987. |
