| British field marshal, born in Ironside, Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland, UK. He served as a secret agent disguised as a railwayman in the Boer War, held several staff-appointments in World War 1, and commanded the Archangel expedition against the Bolsheviks (1918). He was Chief of the Imperial General Staff at the outbreak of World War 2, and placed in command of the home defence forces (1940). The Ironsides, fast light-armoured vehicles, were named after him. He was made a peer in 1941. |
