| biography:
| British statesman, born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, S England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and followed a career in the Diplomatic Corps (1952–66) before moving to work in the Conservative Research Department (1966–70). A Conservative MP from 1974, he became Northern Ireland secretary (1984), home secretary (1985), and foreign secretary (1989–95). He stood unsuccessfully as a candidate in the leadership contest following Mrs Thatcher's resignation (1990). He was made a Companion of Honour in 1996, and received a life peerage in 1997. A prolific writer, he has (by 2002) published 10 books. |
