| biography:
| Mountaineer, born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, S England, UK. A British army officer, he saw military and mountaineering service in India and Europe, and in 1953 led the first successful expedition to Mt Everest. He also led the British party in the British–Soviet Caucasian mountaineering expedition (1958). He was knighted in 1953, and made a life peer in 1966. |
