| Architect, born in Ghent, NW Belgium. Trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, his designs include several works in that city: Maison Tassel (1892–3), which was at the same time individual and contemporary but conscious of tradition; Maison Solray (1894–1900), a luxurious design full of light and movement are world heritage sites; and Maison du Peuple (1895–9), a masterpiece in metal, glass, and stone (demolished in 1964). He is considered the originator of Art Nouveau. |
