| English statesman, born in Houghton, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. He entered parliament in 1624, and in 1642 was one of the five members whom Charles I tried to arrest. In the Civil War, he advocated peace, was accused of treason, and fled to Normandy. In 1660 he was spokesman of the commission delegated to recall Charles II at Breda, and in 1661 was created a baron. |
