biography: Poet, playwright, and philosopher, born in Bergen, SW Norway. He was professor at Copenhagen of metaphysics (1717), eloquence (1720), and history (1730). His first notable works were satirical poems, among them Peder Paars (1719–20), the earliest classic in Danish. After 1724 he turned to history, producing a history of Denmark, and other works. In 1741 appeared another classic, the satirical comic romance Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum (Niels Klim's Subterranean Journey). He became a baron in 1747.
