| biography:
| Judge, born in Cape Town, SW South Africa. He was South African College School's Rhodes Scholar at Oxford (1954–7) and a Vinerian Law Scholar (1957). After two years at the Cape Town bar he returned to Britain, and in 1961 was elected Stowell Civil Law Fellow at University College, Oxford. He wrote The South African Law of Evidence (1963). He was appointed a QC (1977), a judge in the High Court of Justice (1985), a Lord Justice of Appeal (1992), and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (1995). He has twice been director of the English National Opera (1985–90, 1991–4). Knighted in 1985, he was created a life peer in 1995. |
