| Nuclear engineer, born in Tisbury, Wiltshire, S England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, after winning a scholarship while an apprentice in a railway workshop. From 1946, as deputy director of atomic energy production, he constructed the world's first large-scale commercial atomic power station at Calder Hall, Cumbria, opened in 1956. He was knighted in 1951, and created a life peer in 1965. |
