| English soldier, statesman, and philosopher, born in Eyton, Shropshire, WC England, UK, the brother of George Herbert. He studied at Oxford, was knighted at James I's coronation, became a member of the Privy Council, and was ambassador to France (1619). He is regarded as the founder of English deism. His main works are De veritate (1624, On Truth), De religione Gentilium (published 1663, On the Religion of the Gentiles), and his Autobiography (published 1764). |
