| biography:
| British statesman, born in Eltham, Kent, SE England, UK. He studied at Oxford, served in N Africa and Italy (1940–5), then became secretary of the Labour Party's international department, and an MP (1952). He was secretary of state for defence in the Wilson governments of 1964–70, and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1974–9). Unsuccessful in the Labour leadership contests of 1976 and 1980, he became deputy leader (1980–3), narrowly fighting off a challenge from Tony Benn in 1981, and in 1983 was appointed shadow foreign minister. He resigned from the shadow cabinet in 1987, and declined to stand in the 1992 elections. He was created a life peer following his retirement later that year. A keen photographer, he published a selection of his work in Healey's Eye (1980). |
