| biography:
| British lawyer and politician. He studied at Cambridge, saw wartime service in the Royal Navy, was called to the bar in 1948, and made a QC in 1964. Following a successful career as advocate and judge, he entered the House of Commons as MP for Wimbledon (1970). He was solicitor general under Edward Heath (1972–4), and attorney general under Margaret Thatcher (1979–87). He was made a life peer in 1987, and spent a brief period as Lord Chancellor before his retirement in 1988. |
