| biography:
| British soldier and field-marshal, born in South Petherton, Somerset, SW England, UK. A subaltern in World War 1, he rose to chief-of-staff of the Allied Army in Italy in 1944. As Governor-General of Cyprus (1955–7) during the political and terrorist campaign against Britain, he re-organized the security forces to combat terrorism, re-established order through the imposition of martial law and press control, banished Archbishop Makarios, and, although he failed to bring about a political settlement, was widely respected for his straightforward, soldierly approach. |
