| Historical painter, born in Paris, France. A skilful painter of Classical subjects, he was appointed professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (1814), where he counted among his pupils Géricault and Delacroix. He was director of the French Academy of Painting in Rome (1822–8). His works include Le Retour de Marcus Sextus (1799, Louvre). |
