| biography:
| Painter, born in Rouen, NW France. A pupil of Guérin, he was a great admirer of the 17th-c Flemish schools. He painted many unorthodox and realistic scenes, notably ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ (1819, Louvre), based on a shipwreck which had caused a sensation in France. It was harshly criticized, and he withdrew to England, where he painted racing scenes and landscapes. |
