| Lawyer, and authority on architecture and horology, born at Carlton Hall, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, made a fortune at the bar where he was known for his abrasive courtroom tactics, then turned his attention to church architecture and clock-making. He helped to design more than 40 important clocks, including the clock for the tower of the Houses of Parliament, and also for St Paul's Cathedral. |
