| biography:
| British naval commander, born in the Bahamas. He fought with distinction in Howes' action off Ushant (1794), was promoted rear-admiral (1795), and served as Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty (1795–1801, 1804–6). He was also Governor of Newfoundland (1802–4). As admiral he commanded the British fleet at the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. At the Battle of Aix Roads in 1809 he disregarded signals from the naval commander, but was acquitted by a court martial. |
