| biography:
| Shipowner, born in West Hartlepool, Co Durham, NE England, UK. He became a shipbroker in 1876 and soon afterwards established the Furness Line. He went into partnership with Edward Withy in 1885, which marked the beginning of a huge shipbuilding and engineering business. A Liberal MP, he was one of the first to start a co-partnership scheme among his employees. He was knighted in 1895, and created baron in 1910. |
