| biography:
| New Zealand soldier, born in London, UK. He travelled to New Zealand with his parents in 1891, and was educated at Wellington College there. In World War 1 he served with the Royal Naval Division in Gallipoli and France, winning the VC at Beaumont Hamel. In World War 2 he commanded New Zealand forces in the Middle East, Commonwealth forces in ill-fated operations (1941) in Greece, Crete, and later the Sahara Desert, and commanded the New Zealand Corps in Italy (1944–5). He was Governor-General of New Zealand (1946–52), created a baron in 1951, and made Lieutenant-Governor of Windsor Castle (1956–63). |
