| British naval officer, born in Acton, W Greater London, UK. Educated at Bradfield College, he entered the Royal Navy in 1902 and became a gunnery specialist. He served at sea in World War 1 and was chief of staff Mediterranean Fleet (1938–9). In World War 2 he was controller of the navy (1939–42), and commander-in-chief Home Fleet (1943–4), Eastern Fleet (1944), and British Pacific Fleet (1945–6). He was a British signatory at the Tokyo Bay Peace Ceremony (1945). He was made a peer in 1946, and later became First Sea Lord (1948–51). |
