| Archbishop of Canterbury (1945–61), born in Higham-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, C England, UK. He studied at Oxford, was ordained in 1912, and became headmaster of Repton School (1914–32). He was 45 when he took up his first ecclesiastical appointment, as Bishop of Chester (1932). In 1939 he became Bishop of London, and as archbishop crowned Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey (1953). He was created a life peer in 1961. |
