| biography:
| Painter, born in Ostend, W Belgium. He became known for his bizarre and fantastic images, using masks, skeletons, and other ghostly effects as symbols of the evils of society. His paintings aroused much controversy when they were first shown, as in his best-known work, ‘Entry of Christ into Brussels’ (1888, Brussels). He was made a baron in 1929. |
