| biography:
| British air chief marshal of World War 2, born in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, SW Scotland, UK. He served in the Royal Artillery and the Royal Flying Corps in World War 1. As commander-in-chief of Fighter Command (1936–40), he organized the air defence of Britain, which resulted in the victorious Battle of Britain (1940). He retired in 1942, and was created a peer in 1943. |
