| biography:
| British air force officer. He studied at Oxford, served in World War 1 as a fighter pilot, and at the outbreak of World War 2 was assistant chief of air staff. He became head of Fighter Command (1940–2), Middle East Air Command (1943–4), and Coastal Command (1944–5), and directed the successful anti-submarine campaign in the later stages of the War. He then commanded the British Air Force of Occupation in Germany (1945–6), and was military governor of the British zone of occupation (1946–8). After leaving the air force he became chairman of British European Airways (1949–64). |
