| biography:
| British soldier, born in Strabane, W Northern Ireland. Governor of Quebec (1775–7), he successfully defended the city against the Americans under Benedict Arnold, whom he subsequently defeated again on L Champlain in 1776. He was British commander-in-chief in America (1782–3). As Governor of Quebec (1786–9, 1793–6), and Governor of Lower Canada (1791–6), he did much to save Canada for Britain. |
