| British judge. He studied at Cambridge, was called to the bar in 1929, became a KC in 1945, and a High Court judge in 1948. An eminent barrister, he was knighted in 1948 and created a life peer in 1961. He was chairman of the Restrictive Practices Court (1956–60). He was made a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1960 and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1961, before retiring in 1964. Following the publication of the Wolfenden Report in 1957, he participated in a lengthy philosophical debate over whether the law could or should enforce moral principles upon society in general. Among his many publications are Trial by Jury (1956) and The Judge (1979). |
