| British statesman, born in Neath, SC Wales, UK. He studied at Cambridge and the London School of Economics, and was a Labour MP (1924–31, and from 1935). He became minister for economic warfare (1940) and President of the Board of Trade (1942) in Churchill's wartime coalition. As Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer (1945–7), he nationalized the Bank of England (1946), but resigned as a result of ‘budget leakages’ to a journalist. He was made a life peer in 1960. |
