| biography:
| Sociologist, born in Hamburg, N Germany. He studied at Hamburg University and the London School of Economics, and held a succession of academic posts in Germany and the USA in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a member of the European Community Commission (1970–4), then moved to Britain to become Director of the London School of Economics (1974–84). In 1987 he was appointed Warden of St Antony's College, Oxford. He was knighted in 1982, and became a life peer in 1993. |
