| biography:
| West Indian cricketer and statesman, born in Trinidad. In 1928 he became the first West Indian player in England to reach 1000 runs and 100 wickets in one season. During World War 2 he was appointed to look after the interests of the West Indians who had been sent to Britain to help in the war effort. He took a law degree and became known as an opponent of racial discrimination. Knighted in 1962, he was awarded a life peerage in 1969. |
